iFlexx Modular Laboratory Benching at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge – Ray Dolby Centre
The Ray Dolby Centre at the University of Cambridge is a landmark research facility located at the heart of the Cambridge West Innovation District. Spanning over 33,000 square metres across four floors, this cutting-edge building houses advanced laboratories and collaborative spaces for more than 1,100 researchers and students. As the final phase of the University’s major redevelopment of the Cavendish Laboratory, the Ray Dolby Centre replaces outdated facilities with an environmentally sustainable, flexible, and future-ready environment for world-leading scientific research.
InterFocus: The Trusted Laboratory Fit-Out Specialist
InterFocus was honoured to be selected as the laboratory fit-out specialist for this prestigious and complex project. The University required a laboratory benching system that could support a wide range of research disciplines while offering flexibility, durability, and a future-proof design. In response, we worked closely with the client and end users to develop a tailored solution based on the iFlexx Modular Laboratory Benching system, complemented by a range of bespoke laboratory furniture and specialist equipment enclosures.
The project was delivered in six carefully coordinated phases, ensuring seamless integration with the building’s fit-out timeline and the evolving needs of the client.
iFlexx Modular Laboratory Benching: Modular Design for a Future-Ready Laboratory
At the heart of the fit-out is the iFlexx Modular Laboratory Benching system, specifically chosen for its modular design—the key feature that enables laboratories to adapt and evolve as research priorities change. The iFlexx system allows for straightforward reconfiguration of laboratory layouts, minimising disruption while maximising flexibility.
Additional benefits of the iFlexx system include:
Integrated service connectivity for power, gas, data, and other services, ensuring a clean and functional workspace.
Durable construction engineered for the demands of high-usage laboratory environments.
Customisation options such as:
Fixed iFlexx benches for stability and durability.
Height-adjustable iFlexx benches, specifically developed to provide enhanced stability for laser measurement and precision experiments, ensuring minimal vibration and maximum accuracy.
316 stainless steel iFlexx benches for cleanroom environments, with bespoke stainless steel worktops for chemical resistance and hygiene compliance.
While the modular design is the defining feature of the iFlexx system, the selection of Trespa TopLab Base as the main worktop material was also an important element of the project. Known for its durability, chemical resistance, and easy-clean surface, Trespa TopLab Base provides a reliable, hygienic, and practical surface for laboratory environments.
In total, InterFocus supplied and installed over 650 iFlexx modular laboratory benches, tailored to meet the specific needs of each research space within the Ray Dolby Centre.
Bespoke Solutions: Beyond Benching
In addition to the iFlexx system, InterFocus delivered a comprehensive suite of bespoke laboratory furniture and equipment solutions, including:
Custom ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) suites and benches: Fully bespoke workstations, manufactured from high-quality MDF cores with ESD-laminated surfaces, designed in collaboration with the client to provide static-safe environments for electronics research teams.
Fixed benching: Designed to complement the modular iFlexx system, providing stable and reliable workspaces.
Tall storage solutions: Bespoke tall units designed to maximise storage capacity within the laboratory environment.
Wall cupboards: Customised storage solutions providing additional flexibility and organisation for laboratory spaces.
Special fire-rated corridor storage: Secure, compliant storage for sensitive materials within fire-rated enclosures.
Mobile laboratory furniture: A large number of versatile, mobile units designed to support collaborative working across various research spaces.
Specialist acoustic enclosures: Custom-built enclosures for sensitive equipment, providing noise reduction and a controlled research environment.
A Phased Fit-Out for Seamless Delivery
The complexity of the Ray Dolby Centre fit-out required careful planning and execution. InterFocus delivered the project in six phases, ensuring seamless coordination with the building’s fit-out timeline while maintaining close communication with the client. This phased approach allowed for high-quality delivery while accommodating the evolving needs of the project.
