The Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge is a globally recognised centre of excellence, located in the heart of the historic city. As one of the largest departments within the University, it supports world-leading research across a broad spectrum of chemical sciences. The department hosts approximately 200 research staff, 250 postgraduate students, and around 60 academic staff, fostering a vibrant scientific community.
The University of Cambridge, established in 1209, is one of the most prestigious educational institutions in the world. Comprising 31 colleges and over 150 departments, faculties, and institutions, it is home to a distinguished community of researchers and scholars. Affiliates of the University have collectively won more Nobel Prizes than any other institution globally, with the first awarded in 1904.
As a local laboratory furniture manufacturer based in the Cambridge area, InterFocus has an extensive track record of delivering high-quality laboratory refurbishments for the University. Building on this strong relationship, we were entrusted with the task of refurbishing the Chemistry Department’s laboratories and supplying bespoke laboratory furniture solutions.
A Tailored Design for a Historic Environment
The project required a bespoke laboratory design that would seamlessly blend modern functionality with the department’s historic architectural character. Working closely with the client, our team developed a design featuring IROKO solid wood worktops, ensuring a contemporary yet timeless aesthetic that complements the traditional fabric of the building.

This collaborative approach ensured that the final solution met both the functional requirements and aesthetic expectations of the department.
